In First Rider’s Call, Karigan is still resisting the call of the Riders, and has returned to her father’s merchant clan. Soon she was hip-deep in dark magic and political intrigue alike. As much as she believed herself to be a normal girl, destined to become a merchant like her father, circumstances said otherwise: one of the magical brooches of the legendary Green Riders accepted her, and she began developing some unusual abilities. In it, Karigan G’ladheon found herself drawn unwillingly into peril and intrigue when she swore to finish delivering a dying messenger’s missive to his king. It was a wonderful, layered, epic fantasy novel with delightful characters, gripping action, and engaging world-building. When I received a review copy of Kristen Britain’s long-awaited First Rider’s Call, thankfully I realized that I had a copy of her previous Green Rider sitting unread on a shelf, and started with that. Pros: Wonderful epic fantasy in a fantastic world!Ĭons: Some of the bad guys were unnecessarily foolish The narration was full of emotion and really captured the mood of the plot. The narrator brought the story and each of the characters to life beautifully. This series was a 5 star read for me and I highly recommend checking them out. I enjoyed the magic system and the lore and the plot was full of twists and turns that kept me intrigued. I love the theme of ‘found family’ in books and there were many great examples of it here as Misha, Pretha and Finn’s group of friends welcomed Brie and gave her a home when she felt cut off from the world. I loved Brie and Finn (and almost forgave Sebastian). I was really emotionally invested in the characters. I absolutely loved this duo and was caught up in the magic, intrigue, politics, romance, betrayal and allllllll the angst! I’m not usually a fan of love triangles but the one between Brie, Sebastian and Finn was beautifully executed and although I had a favourite, at points I couldn’t work out how it would be resolved, but the author tied it up perfectly. Many will likely stay the course-attempting to incarcerate the problem away-but Raising Lazarus provides an alternative road map for more compassionate and effective ways to use those funds. The book comes at a crucial moment: This year, funds from blockbuster opioid-related legal settlements are beginning to flow to local governments, which will have to decide how to use the money. Macy’s new book, Raising Lazarus, tackles the issue of how to treat the epidemic, making a passionate case for seeing addiction not as a moral weakness or a criminal problem but as an illness that’s treatable with medications like methadone and buprenorphine. Roanoke-based journalist Beth Macy is one of the best-known chroniclers of America’s opioid epidemic-first through her 2018 book, Dopesick, then with its adaptation into a Hulu TV series last fall. Over phone calls and texts, their flirtation continues, and when Jake invites Casey to join him in Europe, she happily accepts, and their romance blossoms! I loved seeing these two together, and enjoyed their fun dynamic, their passion for each other, and their sweetly romantic moments.īut Jake has some pretty significant trauma stemming from a childhood abduction. Was it really possible to meet someone and just know they are the one for you? But with Jake in the middle of a world tour, they are separated sooner than either of them want to be when he has to leave. It’s funny and a little bit flirty, and they end up spending the majority of the weekend together. Their first meeting is hilarious, and a wonderful hint of things to come as Casey’s confidence and lack of concern about Jake’s celebrity, combined with her sharp sense of humour and tendency to word-vomit, leads to some epic back and forth that had me laughing and thoroughly enjoying the banter between them. I love these characters, their story had me captivated, and I loved this one!Ĭasey is a happy, confident and funny accounting student who is celebrating the final preparations for her best friend’s wedding She will be a bridesmaid, and is paired up with the groom’s brother, Jake, who just happens to be one of the biggest rockstars in the world. This book has been on my TBR for the longest time, and I’m so happy that I finally dove in! It’s a fantastic rock star romance that starts off as a fun and flirty story and becomes something so much deeper and more emotional. Hick would be one of several people to make up her close circle, and all of them are examined in detailed in this excellent continuation. Waterstones Non-Fiction Book of the Month for November 2018 Readers are introduced to Zade, Adeline’s stalker. The parallel between Adeline and her great-grandmother fuels the novel, but anything interesting that could have come from it is undercut by the sexual assault. Honestly, this trope is why I picked up the novel in the first place.Īdeline’s investigation coupled with her great-grandmother’s diary entries at the end of each chapter was fascinating. It’s eerie yet sexual invoking all the right emotions without going too far. Second, Adeline’s investigation into her great-grandmother’s murder.Ĭarlton’s writing of the stalker trope is well done. First, the stalker portion at the beginning of the novel. There are two reasons I’m rating it two stars instead of one. However, Haunting Adeline bypasses dark romance completely and goes right to sexual assault.ĭespite only reading half the novel, I’m still rating it two stars. I will admit that dark romance is not my favourite subgenre, however I like to spice up my reading every now and then with one. There are dark romance novels then there’s Haunting Adeline. I loved the whole plot, amazing world building, the beautiful illustrations and not to forget the badasss main character. After I was finished with the first volume, I was left wanting for more. Monstress caught my eye because of its beautiful illustrations and also the intriguing premise which totally sounds like my kinda read and I’ve heard many great things about it.
